NEW YORK —Pfizer’s Celebrex (celecoxib) will be introduced to U. S. pharmacies in two weeks’ time, according to a letter from its U. sales manager, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
The company has been selling the drug for more than a decade to its customers, and the generic version of Celebrex is expected to be sold in the U. by the end of the year. It would be the first drug to be introduced into the U. without a generic version, said Glaxo’s chairman, Hank McKinnell. Pfizer would start selling the generic version in the same time frame as the original Celebrex. Both forms will be covered by U. patents, according to Pfizer.
Pfizer’s marketing strategy was to make Celebrex available in the U. at a drugstore and pharmacy in its own name, or in its own language. It’s the first drug to be introduced as a generic drug, the letter said.
It has been around for more than a decade. After it was launched in 1998, Pfizer was still the only company in that industry that had a U. headquarters. In 2008, Pfizer acquired the rights to the drug for $30 billion, and it later acquired a portion of the company’s earnings.
